Many Glaciers - Grinnell Lake

We went to Many Glacier area of the park today.  From the Many Glacier Hotel, we took a boat "tour" of Lake SwiftCurrent and Lake Josephine. It was supposed to be on a guided hike to Grinnell Lake, but we actually ended up hiking it solo.   Evidently, the guide went on another trail.  We waited at the trailhead marker but the guided group never appeared so we continued on our own.

Grinnell Lake was lovely.  After Grinnell Lake we hiked a little bit of the trail to the falls.  When we arrived back at the boat dock on Lake Josephine there was no boat and the next boat would not be arriving for another 1.5 hours.  We hiked back to Many Glacier Hotel  (2.2 miles).

On the way back to the dock we met a couple from West Virginia (they are on the road for a month) and they recommended the Iceburg Lake hike.  We are going to do that later this week. They compared the lake to Newfoundland and described it as "spectacular".  Can't wait to do that one!

After we fed our faces in the parking lot, we headed back to the campground. We stopped on Many Glacier Road next to Sherburne Lake to see a spectacular wildlife scene.  On the other side of the lake (we needed binoculars) we saw a large mama grizzly bear and her cub. The mama bear was eating an antelope carcass (could see the antlers).  To the right of the mama bear a young grizzly bear approached and was contemplating her meal.  The little cub was on his hind legs with his face on mama's back watching the other bear (so cute!).  In the midst of the little standoff a big black bear came out of the woods right between the mama bear and the young grizzly.  Mama bear started to growl and the little cub got on its hind legs!  The black bear ran off but the young grizzly must have been hungry.  The mama bear ran off the young grizzly for about 200 yards but never returned to continue eating the antelope.  She and her cub went into the woods.  The black bear had circled around and came out of the woods and started eating the carcass as the mama bear and the cub were leaving.  It was pretty awesome to see (especially from a safe distance)!

I only have a few pictures because wonder girl forgot to charge her camera battery!

Love the bridge and the colors of the river rocks. The water is so clear!
